Recently I took a class called “Reading Comics”. Needless to say, it was an amazing class. We focused on a lot of different types of comics and for my personal project, I decided to work on Fullmetal Alchemist. Fullmetal Alchemist is the first manga I will introduce people to (indeed I actually shared it with my Professor while working on this project) and I’ve generally found it to be the most compelling for people who wouldn’t otherwise pick up a manga or watch an anime. It’s complex and it deals with a lot of different themes. In this video essay, I’ve tried to touch on just a few of those.
This essay is an experiment: Hopefully in March I will be sharing a longer, expanded essay for a conference I hope to attend.
